Understanding Excavator Hydraulics
When we recommend a cutter that requires 20 GPM to operate the cutter, we are talking about the Auxiliary Hydraulic Output on the excavator. Though the excavator manufacturer states the excavator puts out 20 GPM, that is true. But it can lead to misunderstanding when you’re trying to select the VMC Excavator Brush Cutter you need. When you install a VMC Excavator Brush Cutter on your excavator and start to move the boom functions, you will notice a drop off in cutter speed. The auxiliary hydraulics on most excavators are second in priority over the other hydraulic functions on the excavator. The excavator is taking some of the hydraulic flow from the cutter to supply the other functions. The travel function on most excavators will take the most hydraulic flow away from the cutter. All brands and even models react differently due to the way the hydraulic systems are designed.
You can eliminate this from happening by installing a priority valve on your excavator. It will dedicate a certain amount of hydraulic flow to go to your VMC Excavator Brush Cutter. These kits usually run a few thousand dollars and are not really feasible on a smaller excavator.
